Are You Aware of the Hidden Brain Injury?

September 08, 2014

With the warmer weather approaching, many of us are into outdoor activities such as ball games and running.

Accidents can occur and in some cases falls might result in concussions.

A concussion is a blow to the head causing altered consciousness and a disruption in normal brain function.

Some causes of a concussion include:
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Falls
  • Failing to wear protective headgear during recreational activities
  • Playing team sports such as football, baseball or soccer
Immediate signs and symptoms of a concussion can include:
  • Confusion
  • Amnesia
  • Headache
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Dizziness
Always monitor individuals for mental and physical changes such as:
  • Persistent headache
  • Numbness or reduced coordinator in extremities
  • Vomiting
  • Slurred speech
Seek medical advice after a blow to the head if you or a love one has signs and symptoms of a concussion. Even though a person may appear to recover quickly, he or she could be suffering from a more serious injury such as brain swelling.
